This rare hand-colored map is a copper-plate lithographic engraving, dating to 1832 by the respected Danish-French cartographer Conrad Malte-Brun. This map is based upon Malte-Brun’s early 19th century cartographic studies and were published in Paris as the “Geographie Universelle.” This particular edition was revised and updated by French engraver J. The official position taken by the Wikimedia Foundation is that "faithful reproductions of two-dimensional public domain works of art are public domain".
It is a representation of the world on a Mercator projection. This photographic reproduction is therefore also considered to be in the public domain in the United States.
